In 2007 Rio Tinto acquired the operating assets of Alcan, including the Ducie-Wenlock resources. The geological models for Ducie-Wenlock and the adjacent Weipa deposit have been amalgamated into one reporting entity. The Weipa deposit also includes the Ely resource, as the deposits are contiguous. Ducie-Wenlock had an inferred resource of 453 million tonnes grading 51.80 per cent bauxite at December 31, 2008. Commercial quantities of bauxite were discovered on Aboriginal lands at Weipa in western Cape York in 1955. In 1961 bauxite mining began on Cape York peninsula. First year commercial production from the Cape York operations occurred in 1964, with 453,365t of bauxite mined and shipped.
In 2009, this annual production figure had increased to 16.3Mt of dry product per year. In 2008 Rio Tinto Alcan began a feasibility study and environmental impact assessment to extend the Weipa mine in an area south of the Embley River. Weipa supplies product to Rio Tinto Alcan's Yarwun refinery in Gladstone, to the Queensland Alumina refinery in Gladstone and to overseas customers
